I thoroughly enjoyed Martin Davies's first Sherlock Holmes novel and had been after this sequel for a while. It did not disappoint. As before, Mrs Hudson, the housekeeper, seems to be one step ahead of her employer and his coleague, Mr Watson. Aided by her faithful maid Flottie, who narrates the novel, they beaver about behind the scenes and Holmes and Watson take all the credit - great team work!!bombay furniture A priceless ruby, The Malabar Rose, has been gifted to the Queen by the Maharajah of Majoudh and Holmes and Watson are consulted regarting its safety while it is exhibited to the public.value city furniture Needless to say it goes astray and must be recovered before the public suspects anything is amiss.
Meanwhile, Mrs Hudson is concerned about the inexplicable disappearance of the quiet, unassuming Mr Phillimore and the city is abuzz with the impending show by the Great Salmanazar, unprecedened escapologist, performing with the wonderous dancer Lola del Fuego. Christmas is fast approaching and then New Year and the atmosphere of excitement is palpable. This is a rip-roaring yarn,ashley furniture if sometimes a bit far fetched. The characers are excellently drawn; all together a great fun read. 4 stars becase it stretched my imagination just a bit too far in places.
I also recommend Mr Davies's 'The Conjuror's Bird' and I'm greatly looking forward to his next novel, 'The Unicorn Road' when it is released in 2009.
